PICK-YOUR-OWN CHERRIES
You pay an entrance fee per person and receive a container – indicating what a 1kg more or less looks like, which you are welcome to fill to the brim with delicious ruby-tinged or sunkissed yellow cherries.
Between picking, take time out to explore the picturesque orchards and, when you’re done, have your container weighed at the farmstall.
We are now cashless.
You will be welcome to come have a picnic – there’s no better way to spend a summer’s day than enjoying the “fruits of your labour” under the cool shade of a pine tree. Please no large groups with busses or any fires this year.
It sometimes gets pretty windy on the farm, so remember to bring a warm jersey or windbreaker. View weather updates here!
The farm is open every day throughout the season. Sign up for our season newsletter for updates, latest pricing and news.
KLONDYKE – WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
Klondyke Farm was bought by Neil Garlick in 1967.
Because of the location and long cold winters as in Europe and encouraged by Jean, he obtained cherry trees in Ficksburg, which were planted in 1968.
In 1973 the pick-your-own season was opened to the public to enjoy the real cherry picking experience.
Visitors could pick their own cherries and had to weigh their fruit in the manager’s garage.
Since then, Klondyke has become a popular November/December attraction for cherry picking, winter snow and all year round accommodation.
RED CHERRIES
Nothing beats fresh summer produce and sweet cherries top the list. You can enjoy this juicy fruit as a simple snack or dessert.
There are so many types of sweet cherries. Most people prefer red or black cherries, such as the Bing and Lambert.
Red cherries range in color from a deep red to a rich mahogany when ripe. Most cherries are intensely sweet with a vibrant aftertaste.
Dark-red cherries are a tasty summer fruit.
YELLOW CHERRIES
Pink and yellow Napolean cherries are light in colour even when ripe.
These sweet cherries are perfect for snacking or eating as a simple dessert all on their own. Or use their pretty colors to full advantage in a cherry salad.
Look for yellow cherries with plenty of blush, it’s caused by sun exposure which usually enhances sweetness.
These cherries are yellow inside and out, with just a bit of red blush on them, and often large. They are quite sweet and very firm.
